Drawing your signature digitally can feel awkward at first. Your finger is wider than a pen, a mouse moves differently from a hand, and a trackpad has its own feel. With a few adjustments you can still get a smooth signature you are happy with. Here is how to do it on each type of device using the free NameToSignature generator.
Before you start
- Open the generator and choose Draw signature.
- Pick your ink color. Dark navy or black looks the most natural.
- Set the Signature size slider. In draw mode it controls the stroke thickness, so a higher value gives bolder lines.
If you make a mistake, select Clear drawing and try again. Most people need a few attempts.
On a phone
- Turn the phone sideways. Landscape mode gives you a wider drawing area, which suits the shape of most signatures.
- Use your fingertip, not the pad. A smaller contact point gives finer control.
- Sign a little larger than on paper. Bigger movements smooth out the wobble.
- Draw at a steady pace. Rushing creates jagged corners, and going too slowly can make lines shaky.
On a tablet
Tablets are the easiest devices for drawing a signature, especially with a stylus. Rest your hand naturally, as you would on paper, and sign at your normal speed. If you use your finger, the phone tips above apply. The larger screen gives you more room.
On a computer with a mouse
- Simplify your signature. Mouse control is limited, so a shorter, simpler version of your signature looks better than a complex one.
- Move slowly and deliberately. Hold the button down for each stroke and release between separate parts, such as between your first name and surname.
- Use the full width. Larger strokes hide small hand tremors.
On a laptop trackpad
Trackpads are the hardest option. Press and hold to draw, using one finger to move, or use a click-and-drag gesture if your trackpad supports it. If it feels too awkward, a cheap mouse or drawing on your phone may give a better result.
Prefer not to draw?
If drawing is frustrating, switch to Type my name and choose a handwriting-style font. You will get a tidy signature instantly.
Save your drawing
When you are happy with it, select Download PNG. You get a transparent image, so only your ink appears when you place it on a document or design. The drawing is created in your browser, and the file stays on your device.
A drawn signature image is not a certified electronic signature. For official documents, check what the recipient requires.
